Asian Pop Newsletter #8

Today’s post is brought to you by spending too much money on iTunes, youtube videos and CNBlue’s new album. Enjoy, because next week Level 7 Civil Servant starts and if it’s good, it might be the only thing I’m talking about.

CNBlue - RE:Blue

CNBlue – RE:Blue

KDRAMA
New posters for IRIS 2. But no Kim Min Jong, which makes me think that maybe he’s not going to be in it after all. And I am not a happy camper, either. Argh. But, hey, Lee Joon continues to look FINE, thank you very much. And … finally! A trailer for IRIS 2 … it looks like it might have some more action (and Lee Joon with a gun).

Massive Lee Jun Ki post. Why is he so perfectly adorable??? I am ALSO excited about two virus/crime/whatever dramas, both on cable stations: JTBC and OCN. Hopefully both of these will show up on DF or Viki. More pictures from Level 7 Civil Servant. I can’t wait for this to start airing! And some Joo Won. Oh, wait, there’s even more Level 7 Civil Servant pictures, now with action shots and abs.

Also, more deets on the new talk show that Changmin’s (shut up) gonna be on. Apparently it’s called Moonlight Prince (wtf) and will be a book focused talk show. I’ll still watch it! Hopefully someone will sub everything and not just the Changmin parts. And even more about Moonlight Prince.

KPOP
I don’t know Korean, so I’m missing stuff, but Phantom’s two new homemade-looking teasers are adorable and hilarious (and here’s another, with English subs, sort of) AND their new single.  Also, Hyori, I love you. Don’t ever change, lady.

I have no feelings, one way or the other, abut Miss A, but they look GREAT here. And here’s another huge post of Miss A photos. I might have to check their music out, since they’re all so adorable. Uh .. H.O.T to make a comeback … really? No. Also, Moon Hee Jun’s new MV … I can’t watch this. Random Yesung looking good. Flowsik + Jaejoong (where is this song, boys?). And gifs of Sungmin playing guitar.

MBLAQ
GO dyed his hair black again, THANK GOD. I choose to believe he hated it as much as I did. Also, pictures of Seungho and Mir on something called The Show. Adorable boys.

CNBlue
I’m pretty sure I love it and the MV for I’m Sorry. Well, okay, I didn’t watch most of it, but I love the SONG. And … the rest, too. CNBlue made their comeback (their album is pretty awesome #justsaying). Here they are on Music Bank. Yonghwa’s in his grandpa/grandma sweater … and still manages to look kind of hot, even with that mess on his head. And here they are on Music Core, where Yonghwa has better (?) clothes. Good job, sirs. And the boys on Inkigayo.

Haha and SimonD (so adorable) tweeted about CNBlue’s comeback. More of this, please. And, lastly, some pictures of CNBlue (and FT Island) from the Golden Disk Awards. I lied, one last CNBlue … Their full length DVD/whatever of their Arena tour is on youtube, omg. #want

2NE1
Pictures from 2NE1′s New Evolution Tour DVD photobook: Minzy, Bom, Dara and CL. I love these ladies. And here’s some adorable Dara + Twitter funtimes. And here’s a bit more, the full conversation between Taeyang and Dara (I could ship it).

Big Bang
I love them, but they are a hot mess. GD’s concert in SK (or one of them) is going to be on the same day as one of Daesung’s concerts in Japan. Good job, YG! And then they released a really weird live album (which I reviewed here). And now YG is announcing all of this GD stuff all of a sudden … doesn’t anyone get a break? What is going on at YG, does he even know what he’s doing??

A nice post on Omona about what Big Bang will be doing for part of 2013. In theory, if you believe that kind of thing. All I really care about is Daesung’s solo album … but I wouldn’t say no to TOP on a drama or Seungri releasing a Japanese album OR a new Taeyang album — or all of that. IDC what GD does, though (unless he releases a full album, in which case I’m kind of fine with that).

GD’s new … single … thing. I don’t … know. Honestly, I really don’t know. What am I supposed to think? Except those clothes look like really bad choices of old school ST aliens … Oh, sorry, that’s not what they were going for? Look at all the fucks you (don’t) give, indeed.

There are a couple of Naver Star columns from BB; Daesung: part one and part two, Seungri and Taeyang. Oh, yes, the best part. Seungri and Kangin tweeting each other: the complete convo is a combination of these two posts. And one last picture of Seungri. Sir. Plus some cute pictures of Daesung and stuff about his album, which is going to be my birthday gift to myself.

CPOP
Oh, look, the F4 IS reuniting. Aren’t you excited? LOL

Anne Yi is totally awesome and brave. Good for her and good for free speech. An time for me to check out her music, best way to support her, I think. JJ Lin MV for/from a video game (Three Kingdoms). I love JJ’s voice, a lot and this MV is pretty nifty. And another JPM MV. I quite like it (and them). And JPM being adorable and on 100% Entertainment (gifs). Yoga making me cry performing at the KKBOX Digital Music awards. Seroiusly, sir. #cry IDK what it is, especially right when he starts singing, there’s just something about him. His singing is so extraordinary (as is this fancam).

While listening to NPR on Saturday morning, I heard this interview with a Chinese-American rapper called MC Jin. The report is fascinating and I bought his English album, it’s really, really good (and on iTunes).

JPOP
ONE OK ROCK HAS A NEW ALBUM. Or will have one. OMG.

Music listened to while writing this: Mostly CNBlue stuff on youtube, and a couple of the MVs listed on this post.

  1. “Oh, look, the F4 IS reuniting. Aren’t you excited?”
I AM. SO FUCKING MUCH. OMG. CAN VANNESS GET THIS HAIR FROM THE F4 DAYS BACK? IT WAS FAILY. AND JERRY AND VIC, CAN YOU LIKE GET ALL HANDSY AND ACT LIKE AN OLD MARRIED COUPLE AGAIN? (sorry, Ken, I don’t really care about you, never have.)

That, right there, just made my day. I had no idea that was going to happen! :D

Also, go Hyori. I know that SK society is even more backwards about women and marriage than Finland or France or the US and I shouldn’t impose my standards on anyone but no one should ever be criticised for saying that it’s ok for a lady not to get married.

    • LOLOL this is the best comment. I love capslock of glee. I would watch their appearances if all of that happened. As long as the Korean F4 doesn’t get back together ….

Aw, YAY! Glad to be of service. :D

Oh, I totally know what you mean. There’s a lot of hate/etc focused on women in Asian countries and when people I like stand up against it, it makes me super happy. And I agree, it’s never okay for people to criticize others about not getting married — not that stops people. In China, there’s this whole thing about leftover women (unmarried women over the age of 27), which is just gross (more about them here). D: I guess that most of my friends and myself are leftover women, at least in China. SIGH.

      • Oh gosh. That article on leftover women… I knew that the problem existed but I had no idea that there were rankings for people!

“There is an opinion that A quality guys will find B quality women, B quality guys will find C quality women, and C quality men will find D quality women,” Huang says. “The people left are A quality women and D quality men. So if you are a leftover woman, you are A quality.”

But it’s the “A” quality women the government most wants to procreate, to improve the ‘quality’ of the population, according to Leta Hong-Fincher.

I mean that whole bit right there, that sounds so wrong. I might have to write a thing on tumblr or LJ about that because I’m pretty sure that it’s an open fact in Chinese society but it’s probably also true in almost every patriarchal society, we’re just better at hiding it behind political correctness.

Actually, that’s probably it. I guess we’re also ranked quite a bit and, tbh, it’s true that I don’t know of many women with PhDs or high paying jobs who are dating/married to guys with lower education/rank. So yeah, I think we’re just better at hiding it…

        • I know. The whole thing is disgusting, but most likely an open fact in Chinese culture (and in different variations across Asian culture as a whole). But I definitely agree that it’s everywhere in our (Western) culture as well and that we’re great at hiding it. Which just grosses me out all over again. And I fully support you writing up a post about it.
